Community Christmas Background
2023 — Where It All Began
In 2023, we were saddened to learn of the passing of a friend's wife. Our hearts went out to him and to everyone who would be missing a loved one on Christmas Day. Instead of buying each other gifts, we decided to host a Free Community Christmas — SutherHart Family style — so no one would have to spend the day alone.
We welcomed about 60 people throughout the day. Everyone who walked through the door was greeted with a smile, handshake, or a hug. No one sat alone. Although most were strangers when they arrived, they left as friends.
Together, we played games, gave out prizes, and took “trips around the world” using Google Earth to revisit the places people once called home. We served fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, wraps, build-your-own deli sandwiches, and desserts — simple food, shared with love.
At first, we imagined the event would be for individuals spending the holiday by themselves. We quickly learned that being alone doesn't always mean being physically alone. Many individuals, couples, and families simply weren’t able to gather with their loved ones that year. We also discovered something unexpected: most guests didn’t want to go home mid-afternoon — they wanted to stay, connect, and soak in the warmth of the day.
2024 — Growing in Community
In 2024, we expanded the tradition. We added the SutherHart holiday meal — prime rib and turkey with all the trimmings — alongside the late-breakfast and lunch options from the previous year. We also extended the hours so people could stay longer and feel fully at home.
This time, more than 105 guests joined us throughout the day. We were especially honoured to welcome our local first responders, who took a moment away from keeping the community safe to enjoy a warm, home-cooked meal. We also met travellers from out of town and individuals who simply walked in off the street. Everyone found connection, laughter, and a sense of belonging. Many guests told us they weren’t sure what to expect — but they left with full hearts, new friends, and memories that carried well beyond Christmas.
2025 — Bigger Hearts, Bigger Gathering
This year, we’re doing it again — bigger, warmer, and more joyful — to ensure no one spends Christmas alone.
Food will be available all day, starting with morning treats, followed by lunch delights, and culminating in a Christmas dinner buffet featuring turkey, prime rib, ham and all the delicious fixings.
Enjoy a day packed with games, prizes, and exciting trips around the world, along with beverages, music, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories.
Come hungry, come ready to have fun, and come ready to celebrate the season together!
